"Within the Woods is a stark, modern day Horror film from Director/
Cinematographer
Luke Massey, from his own script. The film has been
made with the classic low budget horror film in mind, think
"Evil Dead" meets "Night of the Living Dead" with the production
values of Robert Rodriguez's debut "El Mariachi" or Peter Jackson’s
"Bad Taste". This is not a glamorous Hollywood studio flick, but a
visceral, plot driven horror shot using novel filming, lighting and
Makeup effects techniques to tell the story of a broken family
struggling to keep things together while facing real terror.
The film is set a few
days from now, when a mutated strain of Avian Influenza is about to
affect two groups of young adults. Featuring a cast and crew from a
variety of backgrounds and filmed entirely in the West Midlands, the
film focuses on the unknown potential facing humanity if the H5N1
strain of influenza ever crossed over into the population. The story
takes place over 24 hours and begins with a wild animal smuggler
bringing in a rare bird from the Far East and meeting with his
contact on the outskirts of the forest. The bird is infected with
the mutated strain of H5N1 and passes on the disease when it attacks
him. Later on the same day two groups of young adults on separate
story arcs heading into an isolated area of woodlands in the hear of
the Warwickshire countryside. The first group is four former foster
children heading back to the cabin they used to stay in when they
were children and hoping to repair their broken family ties. The
second group are eco protestors looking to try and stop the proposed
redevelopment of the same woodlands by a building company. As the
night progresses they encounter the first victims and start the
fight for their lives." |

"Within The Wood's is a horrific and violent horror story
about real characters put in an unreal situation. At its
core, is not your usual horror story line, but rather a
story with a focus on a broken foster family reunited after
several years and forced to confront a difficult past
For my directing début, I wanted a horror film with the same
low‐budget feel of Evil Dead and Bad Taste but driven by
characters audiences could relate to and care enough about
that they would want to follow them till the very end. As
far as being a low budget film I always intended to embrace
this and not hide away from it, I loved the blatant
plasticine effects in Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson's début
films and didn't want to shy away from using as any effects
as possible even if they weren't up to the high glossed
computer imaged Hollywood effects we are all used to
nowadays.
Within The Woods has also given me the opportunity to humbly
attempt to emulate the styles of film makers I admire such
as Robert Rodriguez, Sam Raimi, and Shane Meadows. I also
reference films which have influenced me through my writing
and directing style films as varied as: Oliver, Mary
Poppins, Jurassic Park, Dead Man's Shoes, Evil Dead, Lord Of
The Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring, Jurassic Park, Shane,
Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid, El Mariachi, Midnight
Express, Sin City, Planet Terror, Blood Simple, Tombstone,
and The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert
Ford.
When I got to doing the post‐production I wanted to create a
look unique from any low‐budget horror film I had seen
before, this is where the influence of Robert Rodriguez
really kicked in. Using the latest in post‐effects software,
I painstakingly hand designed over 80 different visual
effects to give the film the look it has now. is the part I
am most proud of; the sterile comic book look is something I
never thought I would achieve to the level we did and I
really feel we have created something truly standout in the
way the film looks and feels.
Writing and Directing 'Within The Wood's' as well as being
Director Of Photography, Executive Producer, and Editor has
been an amazing experience and an extremely fulfilling one.
I've managed to fulfil my lifelong dream of writing and
directing a film, a film that shows the films I love and why
I love them and also has a bit of me and my past in it .
Some may see this as a début film by a 23 year old naive
film maker but I will always look back to this as the real
beginning f my career and the film I will always feel most
affection for." |
